Under the Weather

I'm guest posting today over at Happiness Is on air travel with babies. Click on over and leave me some love and good advice!

My sweet Easter boy.

The radio silence has absolutely been the result of a terrible virus that attacked my little man. His wonderful caregiver called me Wednesday morning to ask if he had gotten into some ants, by chance, because she was noticing some spots on him. Well, of course I had my bag on my arm and was out the office door before we could complete our phone call.

I called the pedi's office from the road and asked for a nurse to call me back, just to ask her one million questions about what might be going around, what I should look for, should I bring him in, should I drive straight the ER, oh my gosh, should I panic? (etc etc). The pediatric nurses at our office are always so gracious on the phone--God bless them. The calls they must receive every day! She had me take pics and e-mail them for the doctor to look at. (We love our pedi for reasons like this and many others.) Benadryl and tylenol (yep, fever too) were the prescribed treatment and to bring him in if it did not improve.

By the next morning, he was not better at all, and actually, terribly worse, so I took him in to see the doctor. It was confirmed to be viral, and it would have to run its course. And the words, "It will get worse before it improves" were said. I was so very sad for my boy.

His fever finally broke sometime Friday morning. He was such a trooper through the whole ordeal, and he and I spent hours just wrapped up on the couch trying to make him comfortable. I'm happy to say that he is back to his happy self today, but with his rash still healing.

I think my mommy heart is still bruised today too.

  4. Was it roseola? Both of my boys have had that and it looks HORRIFIC! When Will had it, we went to Wal-Mart on about day 4. It had traveled from his groin to his torso, to his arms and legs, then to his face. Day 4 it was his face. He had been fever free for several days and was acting fine - but looked really funny (and kinda scary). We got all kinds of looks! But at Wal-Mart, you see weird things anyway, right?!

    1. When I e-mailed the pics to the doc, that was the first potential diagnosis, but when I took him the next day, he didn't call it anything specific, just that it was viral. Either way--it was absolutely horrible. I just couldn't post a pic on here because it was so awful to see. He went from small spots to all over, overnight. We had a similar Wal-mart incident with a cashier in particular!

    2. And I should also mention that the nurse who took his vitals and weighed him--when I undressed him to show her, she said, "Oh my gosh, I have never seen anything like this." Umm, thanks for making me feel better!

    3. I know that just makes you feel wonderful! Will's were horrible too - freaked me out. But I could tell it wasn't a food allergy (since he has those too). Glad he is better now. When Luke had it - it didn't look quite as bad, but it was still not pretty.

  5. Hope he feels better! His outfit is ADORABLE!
P had a rash on her face that they thought was everything from roseola to something else horrific that led to her being on steroids and it ended up being a skin sensitivity to citrus/acid. So frustrating, the drs! We figured it out on our own after 2 rounds of antibiotics and the steroid didn't do a single thing and she had a crazy rash for like 8 weeks

  6. Poor little man! Thanks for stopping by my blog, Emily! I tried to respond directly to your comments, but I think you've got your email blocked from your profile so it wouldn't let me! I blogged about how to fix it here - http://brittanyandmattcoleman.blogspot.com/2012/02/run-dont-walk.html

Anyway, I hope your little guy is all better now - I know how frustrating it is to be told it's "just a virus" when they feel so awful. There is nothing worse than seeing your child sick - nothing!
